Overview

Since late May 2026, Mauritania’s coast‑guard has been rescuing large numbers of migrants under a 2024 EU‑Mauritania partnership, while traffickers shift departures to nearby ports. EU‑funded reception centres in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou provide short‑term assistance, and a €210 million security boost has expanded patrols, checkpoints and identity checks. Despite these measures, boats continue to reach Spain’s Canary Islands, prompting Spanish rescues off El Hierro and Lanzarote and judicial orders to expel some arrivals. Concerns have been raised about the protection of migrant minors, whose representation under the EU Migration and Asylum Pact remains unresolved. In mid‑July a severe maritime tragedy unfolded. Between 14 and 18 July, two vessels bound for the Atlantic “backway” route—one from Gambia after a 25‑day sea voyage and another from Senegal—suffered catastrophic incidents off Mauritania’s coast. Mauritanian authorities rescued 387 people, reported 122 missing near Nouakchott, and confirmed at least 144 migrants dead or missing. An earlier report cited a Gambian fishing vessel intercepted near Nouadhibou with a death toll of around 234. The UNHCR expressed deep sorrow, highlighted the plight of surviving children, and called for stronger search‑and‑rescue operations and the development of safe, legal migration pathways. Late July, the Canary Islands regional government faced internal criticism. The PSOE parliamentary group accused the executive of pushing a new Tourism Law through an urgent decree, calling the move “fraudulent” and a bypass of the public consultation that began in July 2025. Simultaneously, the regional administration rejected a Spanish‑government request to appoint temporary representatives for unaccompanied migrant minors during the triage phase, citing the lack of a clear protocol. A bilateral meeting on 26 August is planned to resolve the dispute. On 26 July, an overloaded migrant cayuco intercepted off El Hierro carried about 165 occupants from Gambia, Senegal, Guinea and Mali.
