West African political and security instability

West Africa faces a complex landscape of political instability, security threats, and humanitarian challenges. The region possesses significant mineral reserves, such as gold and lithium, but investment is hindered by terrorism, climate shocks, and political crises. Recent coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger led to their suspension from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the subsequent formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to coordinate defense and economic integration.

Security tensions have manifested in specific incidents, including reports of gunfire and detonations near the Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire border. In response to regional threats, ECOWAS and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs signed an agreement in Abuja to combat small arms proliferation. Other regional developments include Mali seeking strategic cooperation with Algeria and a major landfill collapse in Conakry, Guinea, which caused significant casualties.
