In early August 2026, West Devon Borough Council faced scrutiny over two separate housing proposals in Tavistock. Independent councillor Adam Bridgewater questioned the Green Hill development, highlighting inconsistent figures for the number of homes (40‑65) and urging a detailed traffic‑impact assessment for the site and the nearby Violet Lane scheme. Residents had already lodged dozens of objections, and the council was pressed to provide clear information before any decision.

A few days later, the council reviewed an expansion of the historic Maynard Almshouse Charity’s facilities. The plan to add a new terrace of eight almshouses and refurbish existing flats triggered formal objections from nearby residents who cited privacy loss, view obstruction, traffic congestion, structural safety, and the visual impact of heat‑pump ducts. While supporters emphasized the importance of almshouses for older residents, opponents focused on specific design harms.

Both cases illustrate ongoing local resistance to new housing projects, with residents demanding transparent planning data, traffic studies, and designs that respect existing community concerns.
