Western Balkans European integration and civil society

Overview

Regional efforts to advance European integration and civil society engagement in the Western Balkans have focused on both policy-level cooperation and local empowerment.

In early October, the Civil Society and Think Tank Forum of the Western Balkans opened in Pristina, Kosovo. Organized by the Open Society Foundations Western Balkans and the governments of Kosovo and Montenegro, the forum serves as a platform for the Berlin Process. During the event, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti highlighted the importance of the rule of law and shared European values in fostering regional cooperation.

By mid-October, initiatives expanded to include specific economic and structural discussions. In North Macedonia, civil society organizations received information regarding EU-funded support for youth entrepreneurship, digital skills, and artificial intelligence in the Kočani region. Concurrently, at a Peace and Democracy Summit in Kosovo, experts addressed the slow pace of EU enlargement, discussing political obstacles and the need for a new vision for Western Balkan membership.
