The blaze likely originated from a spark caused by a mowing machine operated by the Walloon government, an intervention intended to promote biodiversity that inadvertently contributed to the destruction. The loss has caused significant emotional distress in local communities, described by some as ‘solastalgia’—the distress caused by environmental change. Drought restrictions remain in effect. In the Province of Namur, Governor Denis Mathen extended outdoor fire bans until 1 September due to persistent water deficits.
