Western Macedonia regional development drive

Entities: Fair Transition Programme · Kostis Chatzidakis · Western Macedonia · Public Power Corporation (DEI) · Alexander Soumelidis

Overview

In early July 2026 the regional authority of Western Macedonia launched a public consultation on a “Strategic Plan for Digital Transformation”, co‑created with the University of Western Macedonia. The plan calls for modernising public services, establishing Living Labs, setting up knowledge units and auctioning an AI‑manufacturing hub by year‑end.

A few days later the Regional Development Agency ANKO signed a memorandum to create an Office of Externship, tasked with helping local firms reach European and global markets, delivering export‑oriented training and attracting investment.

On 28 July, the Greek government unveiled a €5.4 billion development programme for the region, financed through the EU‑backed Fair Transition Programme and the Public Power Corporation (DEI). The package targets more than 11,000 new jobs – roughly 7,500‑8,000 linked to DEI projects, 3,200 from private investment and about 5,700 permanent positions. Completed actions include the E65 highway upgrade, school and health‑facility improvements and employment programmes administered by DYPA. Pending works by the end of 2026 feature a DEI co‑generation district‑heating unit, the Grevena‑Basilitsa road and new natural‑gas networks. A €50 million subsidy will aid up to 10,000 households in installing heat‑pumps, solar water heaters and photovoltaic systems with storage. Unemployment fell from 23.8 % in 2019 to 11.9 % in Q1 2026.
