WhatsApp feature and safety updates

Overview

WhatsApp is rolling out a series of updates focused on group management, user interface improvements, and safety controls.

Initial updates introduced features to enhance group interaction, such as the ability to create sub-groups from existing large chats and a tool that automatically generates new groups based on poll results. The poll system was also updated to include voting deadlines and the option to hide participant identities.

Subsequent developments expanded into parental controls and interface redesigns. For users aged 13 to 17, parents can now link accounts via a parental PIN to manage certain privacy settings, such as profile photo visibility and group invitations. While parents receive notifications regarding group activity, end-to-end encryption ensures that private messages and calls remain unreadable. Regarding artificial intelligence, parents can select between standard Meta AI settings or a ‘Limited Content’ mode.

To further enhance privacy, WhatsApp is testing a ‘Restricted Chat’ feature, which replaces the previous ‘Advanced Chat Privacy’ setting. Currently being rolled out to beta testers on both iOS and Android, this tool allows users to manually isolate specific conversations to the primary mobile device, preventing access through linked devices like tablets, WhatsApp Web, or desktop applications. This measure is intended to stop unofficial clients and AI agents from accessing messages through linked channels. The feature also restricts the automatic saving of media, disables chat exports, and prevents the use of Meta AI within those chats.

Interface testing includes a redesigned, floating navigation bar for Android, which may integrate a dedicated Meta AI button. New security testing includes a classic password feature for Android users, intended to provide an additional layer of protection beyond standard SMS verification to mitigate risks such as SIM swapping. Additionally, the platform is working on tighter integration with Instagram and Facebook, allowing users to share posts directly to WhatsApp.
