WhatsApp is expanding its integrated payment system to new markets, including several European countries. Recent updates to the iOS beta version feature a redesigned interface for managing credit and debit cards, enabling users to pay contacts directly and store shipping addresses. This expansion may position the platform as a competitor to existing instant transfer services like Bizum. Parallel to this expansion, security authorities have identified a rise in sophisticated zero-click attacks targeting WhatsApp accounts. The Spanish Guardia Civil reported that these attacks are particularly dangerous because they do not require victims to click links or perform specific actions to be compromised. Subsequent reports indicate a wave of these attacks specifically targeting Apple users by exploiting vulnerabilities in outdated versions of iOS and the WhatsApp application. Once attackers gain access, they impersonate victims to contact friends and family, often using simulated emergencies to solicit urgent money transfers. In response to these threats, the Italian Polizia di Stato has issued a nationwide warning regarding this widespread fraud wave. Authorities report that while Apple has released security updates to address the vulnerabilities used in these attacks, devices running outdated operating systems remain at risk. Criminals are also utilizing social engineering methods to gain unauthorized access. To mitigate these risks, officials recommend immediately updating both the iOS operating system and the WhatsApp application, enabling two-step verification, and regularly monitoring the ‘Linked Devices’ section to disconnect unrecognized sessions. Users are also advised to utilize biometric protections, such as Face ID or Touch ID. Recent developments show Meta is introducing several interface and utility improvements. Users will soon see photo, video, and sticker previews directly in the chat list, while iPhone users are receiving expanded chat themes and color palettes.
