WHO Director-General election process

Overview

The World Health Organization is preparing for the election of its next Director-General, scheduled to take place during the 80th World Health Assembly in May 2027. The organization faces significant challenges regarding funding stability and global health architecture ahead of this transition. As of March 2026, only 73% of the 2026–27 base budget was financed, with a projected decline in global development assistance impacting low-income countries.

Seven candidates have been officially confirmed to succeed Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al-Kuwari, Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, Dr. María P. Neira, Mr. Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Dr. Li Song, and Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan. Dr. Tamamyan, a pediatric oncologist from Yerevan State Medical University, was nominated by Botswana.

The selection process includes a candidates’ forum in Geneva on November 18–19, 2026, to engage with Member States. This will be followed by a shortlisting process in early 2027, where the WHO Executive Board is expected to shortlist five candidates. Following interviews, the Board will nominate up to three individuals for consideration by the Assembly. The final appointment will result in a new leader assuming office on August 16, 2027.
