Authorities in the Iberian Peninsula continue to implement measures to manage wild boar populations due to public safety, agricultural, and environmental concerns. In Portugal, the situation is intensifying in the Santarém district. In the municipality of Mação, Mayor José Fernando Martins reported that wild boars are affecting nearly all localities, causing damage to municipal heritage, small crops, and road safety. To address population growth, the Portuguese government is preparing a pilot project to provide financial compensation for every wild boar killed. Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, acknowledged the surplus of animals, stating, “We have too many wild boars.” The strategy aims to incentivize reduction in high-concentration areas, such as Alentejo, where farmers and motorists have reported frequent issues. The 11 municipalities of the Médio Tejo Intermunicipal Community (CIM) have expressed collective interest in joining this pilot project.
