Warsaw has faced a significant surge in its wild boar population, with estimates ranging between 3,000 and 7,000 animals. Between January and September 2026, the city recorded approximately 16,000 incidents and 160 attacks on humans. The growing population has also led to an increase in traffic accidents, with collisions rising from 95 in 2022 to 341 in the most recent year. In response to these safety concerns, the Mazovian Voivodeship Sejmik passed a resolution authorizing population reduction within the city for a two-year period. This measure allows for reductionary culling or capture followed by euthanasia. Intervention is permitted for animals that pose an extraordinary threat to life, health, or property, specifically targeting those that have lost their natural fear of humans or inhabit residential areas and public road corridors. Recent data from Municipal Forests highlights the scale of the conflict, noting that sightings rose from 4,713 in 2023 to over 14,000 between January and July 2026. During that period, 159 attacks on humans and 42 attacks on dogs were recorded, with the highest frequency of sightings occurring in the Białołęka and Wawra districts. Regarding the implementation of the Sejmik resolution, Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka emphasized that local governments should make population management decisions in cooperation with hunters to ensure resident safety. The resolution does not mandate specific quotas but provides the legal framework for addressing animals that threaten public safety while navigating restrictions imposed by African Swine Fever (ASF) concerns. Following the resolution, controversy has emerged regarding the lack of a fixed numerical limit on culling. Animal rights organizations have raised objections, citing a potential lack of compliance with animal protection laws and a consultation process that lasted only 11 days.
