The autumn rabies vaccination campaign for wild foxes has expanded across Poland, with the Veterinary Inspection coordinating operations in nine provinces. The campaign is scheduled to run through September 30, 2026. In the Łódź Voivodeship, the campaign includes the aerial distribution of specialized baits until September 30. These baits are described as brown-green, meat-fish flavored discs or bars, approximately 4.5 cm in size, containing a plastic blister with the vaccine. They are dropped into uninhabited areas such as forests, fields, and meadows. In the Lubelskie Voivodeship, the operation was set for September 10 to 13, utilizing aerial drops of fish-scented, brown-green vaccine cubes over forests and meadows, supplemented by manual distribution in difficult terrain. In the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, activities were scheduled to continue until September 16. As of late September 2026, the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate has confirmed six rabies outbreaks in Poland, spanning the Lubelskie, Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Podkarpackie voivodeships. Recent cases identified in September include a marten in Bóbrka and a fox in Marysin. The disease has been detected in wild animals, such as foxes and raccoon dogs, as well as domestic animals, including a cat. Following these outbreaks, Lubelskie Voivodeship launched an additional vaccination campaign targeting 26 municipalities along the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. This fourth regional campaign involves the manual placement of approximately 8,400 vaccine doses in areas where outbreaks were detected, specifically including the Bialski and Tomaszowski counties. Authorities, including the Polish Hunting Association, have issued strict safety protocols. The public is urged not to touch, pick up, or move the baits, as human scent can discourage foxes from consuming them. If the liquid vaccine inside the blisters makes skin contact, individuals should wash the area thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice. ~~To prevent accidental ingestion by domestic animals, pet owners are advised to keep cats indoors and dogs on leashes for 14 days following bait placement.~~
