Wildfire and suspected arson in Spain
Overview
Wildfire risks and suspicions of arson persist across various regions of Spain. In the southwest of León, near the villages of Armunia and Oteruelo de la Valdoncina, residents continue to report intense smoke columns and parallel fire fronts. Locals have expressed frustration with municipal authorities for a lack of effective solutions, noting that only the Procurador del Común has responded to their alerts. Residents have suggested an active arsonist is targeting the region and have expressed a willingness to cooperate with law enforcement despite the difficult mountainous terrain.
In Plasencia, a fire near Salamanca Avenue previously triggered emergency protocols due to its proximity to urban infrastructure and a wastewater treatment plant. Authorities suspected the fire was intentional, noting it originated on land where maintenance had been requested since May.
More recently, forest fires have been reported in northern Spain. In Pendilla de Arbas (León), an intentional fire has spread into Asturias, requiring over twenty aerial and ground resources to stabilize the blaze in steep terrain. Meanwhile, in Quintanas de Hormiguera, on the border between Cantabria and Palencia, an active fire caused by an electrical line arc is being addressed by regional governments and MITECO aircraft. A fire in Arza (Burgos) is also under monitoring.
