Following destructive wildfires in the western Attica region, the municipality of Agios Vasileios has begun implementing recovery and infrastructure measures. Initial assessments by the General Directorate for Restoration of Natural Disaster Impacts (GDAEFK) inspected 55 buildings in the municipality, determining that 19 were dangerous or slated for demolition, while 12 were deemed temporarily uninhabitable. To facilitate recovery, the municipality secured €1.5 million for the widening and resurfacing of the Agios Vasileios coastal road, a critical evacuation corridor. Subsequent government coordination led to an additional €1.2 million announcement for interventions on road axes connected to the coastal route, alongside funding for a new grader to maintain the rural road network. Officials noted the road serves a dual role as a development axis and lifesaving infrastructure for fire services and evacuations. As recovery efforts continue, officials have identified new risks posed by the loss of vegetation. Government Vice President Kostis Hadjidakis noted that the lack of plant cover has increased the threat of soil erosion, landslides, and flooding during heavy rains, prompting plans for anti-erosion and flood protection studies. Local Mayor Giannis Tatarakis reported that essential services, including electricity, water, and telecommunications, were restored within three days of the fire. However, damage remains extensive, affecting tens of thousands of acres, homes, businesses, and livestock. Through AROGI, eligible residents with damaged primary residences can apply for financial aid to restore or replace household goods, with amounts up to €6,000 depending on household size and damage extent.
