Wildfire risk and outbreaks in Spain

Overview

Due to extreme wildfire risks driven by summer water stress and dry vegetation, authorities in Spain’s Lleida region implemented strict access restrictions in Baronia de Rialb and Serra de Mont-roig. These measures, part of the Alfa Plan, prohibited motorized vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists from entering approximately 31,720 hectares of affected land.

Following these preventative measures, several fire outbreaks were reported. In the Baronia de Rialb region, a lightning strike ignited a fire near Treguany, prompting the deployment of 21 ground units and aerial support to combat the blaze. Additionally, four fire outbreaks were detected in the Vall de Gallinera and Pego areas of Spain; authorities there suspect these may have been caused by arson.
