Wildfires and fire incidents in Europe

Overview

In mid-August 2026, severe wildfires impacted several European regions. In Greece, fast-moving flames on the island of Salamina caused two fatalities and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and tourists. The fires, fueled by high winds, damaged homes and vehicles.

Simultaneously, Belgium’s High Fens nature reserve experienced its largest wildfire in recent history, burning approximately 3,000 hectares and moving toward the German border. This prompted evacuations and required international firefighting support from Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

By late August, fire incidents continued across Belgium and the Netherlands, though the focus shifted toward various residential and localized fires. These included a fire at a nursing home in Evere, Belgium, which resulted in hospitalizations due to smoke inhalation, and several incidents in the Netherlands involving hay bales, a horse trader’s facility, and residential properties.
