In late July 2026, Italy faced a series of mountain wildfires. On July 21, a fire ignited on Monte Cacamello near Bolognola; firefighters deployed ground crews, a Canadair water‑dropping aircraft, and a helicopter to battle advancing fronts. On July 30–31, separate fires erupted in the Verbicaro and Valsesia regions, where high temperatures and drought heightened the risk of spread. In Verbicaro, a fire burned vegetation and vineyards before being brought under control, while in Valsesia, authorities warned of rapid spread and issued regional fire prevention orders. In early August, a lightning-induced blaze on Monte della Piastra near Valdieri in Piedmont burned at least 40 hectares and threatened the frazione of San Lorenzo. By August 7, the fire had burned for eight days, with Mayor Guido Giordana noting that high temperatures hindered containment. Authorities utilized Eurodrone Flight Systems to monitor hotspots between 200°C and 400°C, and the evacuation of the Desertetto hamlet remained in effect. The emergency officially concluded on August 9, following rainfall. On August 12, a new forest fire affected Monte Barone in the Biella region. On August 13, a major wildfire broke out on Monte Goi in the Spina Verde regional park near Como. Fueled by strong winds, the fire sent large columns of ash and smoke toward the city center, forcing the evacuation of approximately 50 to 55 residents. While the fire was brought under control, small outbreaks regained strength on August 14. Local officials noted that unremoved timber from a 2023 storm may have contributed to the risk, and political representatives have called for strategic forest management plans. By August 16, wildfires intensified in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Flames advanced toward Monte Amarianute, forcing the evacuation of the Pissebus area near Tolmezzo. Emergency efforts involved regional helicopters, a Canadair, and an Italian Army L-11 helicopter, alongside Air Tractor Fire Boss aircraft from Slovenia. Other active fronts were reported at Monte Nero, Monte Naiarda, and Monte Cozzarel.
