Wildfires in Montenegro

Widespread wildfires have impacted multiple regions across Montenegro, including Podgorica, Cetinje, Nikšić, Kolašin, Plužine, Šavnik, and Pljevlja. Emergency response efforts have utilized aircraft from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Montenegrin Army, with reports indicating 125 tons of water were dropped in a single day to combat the flames.

Environmental concerns have been raised regarding the impact on protected lands. The organization NVO Ozon reported that fires in the Nikšić municipality are occurring near areas proposed for the NATURA 2000 European network of protected areas. The group suggested that fires might be intentionally triggered by interests seeking to prevent environmental protections that could impact future investments, such as solar farms.

As the situation progressed, a wildfire broke out on Štirovnik, the highest peak of Lovćen National Park. Strong winds facilitated the rapid spread of the fire, requiring intervention from firefighters, national park wardens, and the Montenegrin Army. In response to these events, researchers have criticized the state for failing to protect natural and cultural heritage, calling for increased accountability and better resource allocation from government leadership to ensure nature protection becomes a state priority.
