Wildfires in North Macedonia near Skopje

Overview

Wildfires on Mount Žeden and Mount Kitka have caused significant smoke and reduced visibility in the Skopje valley. The fire on Mount Žeden, which originated near Tetovo and spread toward the Skopje region due to wind and dry vegetation, has been brought under control. Firefighters from Tetovo and Skopje reported that approximately 90 percent of the Žeden fire has been extinguished, preventing the flames from reaching vineyards, orchards, and forest areas near the village of Boyane.

While the Žeden fire is largely contained, crews continue to battle active flames on Mount Kitka. This fire is spreading across the municipalities of Studeničani and Zeleničani, affecting locations including Morane, Vrtekica, and Ramni Gaber. Air currents from both mountain fires continue to carry smoke into Skopje, causing a strong smell of burning and varying intensities of haze throughout the city.
