Wildlife conservation and population trends in the Balkans

Overview

Conservation and rescue efforts in the Balkan region have shown positive outcomes. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a deer herd on Majevica produced seven new calves following a reintroduction initiative supported by local residents and hunters. In Serbia, a foal rescued from Suva Planina is receiving specialized care to stabilize its health.

Data from the 2025 Forestry Bulletin released by the Republic Statistical Office indicates an increase in several Serbian wildlife populations compared to 2023. Bear numbers rose to 445, while the wolf population grew to 1,919. The lynx population also increased to 69 individuals. While populations of beavers, otters, steppe polecats, and ermines remained stable, the weasel population declined to 4,233 individuals. Additionally, there was a slight decrease in the total number of animals harvested in Serbian hunting grounds, with 223,119 animals recorded in 2025.
