Wildlife management and predator activity in Moldova

Overview

In October 2026, Moldova initiated a rabies vaccination campaign for wild foxes. Co-financed by the European Union, the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) began a manual distribution of vaccine baits from October 20 to November 2 to prevent zoonotic disease spread and work toward rabies-free status. This follows a year in which Moldova recorded 96 rabies outbreaks.

Concurrently, residents in the Basarabeasca district, specifically in Ivanovca, reported increased wolf activity. Villagers documented wolves roaming near homes during daylight hours to prey on poultry and goats. Local families have expressed fear of leaving their homes at night due to the proximity of the animals. While wolf packs are active in the surrounding forests, hunting remains prohibited under current European Commission regulations. The Ministry of Environment has urged citizens to exercise caution following reports of wolves wandering between houses and attacking livestock in residential yards.
