Wildlife poaching incidents in Moldova
Overview
Authorities in Moldova are investigating several incidents of illegal hunting and poaching involving protected wildlife.
In the Rîșcani district, five birds listed in the Red Book of Moldova—including one black stork and four Eurasian spoonbills—were found shot near a water basin in Pîrjota village. The death of the black stork was detected after its GPS signal, monitored by specialists in Estonia, abruptly stopped. Environmental inspectors and local authorities conducted an investigation, seizing three weapons and confirming the presence of small metal projectiles from hunting cartridges.
Dorin Poverjuc, head of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate, estimated the environmental damage from the Rîșcani incident to exceed 65,000 lei. Investigators believe four individuals were in the area at the time of the crime.
In a separate incident in the Călărași district, a two-year-old deer was shot illegally near the village of Novaci during the night of September 18–19. Environmental inspectors are currently investigating both cases of wildlife crime.
