Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in South America

Overview

Authorities in Argentina and Chile have conducted various operations to combat illegal wildlife trade and rescue animals from captivity.

In Córdoba, Argentina, Environmental Police released 42 rehabilitated animals—comprising 41 birds and one gray fox—into the Vaquerías Natural Reserve. These animals had been rescued from illegal captivity and the domestic pet trade, undergoing quarantine and behavioral rehabilitation at the Tatú Carreta rescue center. To assist in scientific monitoring, the birds were fitted with alphanumeric rings.

In broader regional operations, Chilean authorities transferred eight exotic animals, including macaws, reptiles, and a boa constrictor, to a specialized center in the Araucanía region following a month of rehabilitation. Simultaneously, Argentine officials recovered 135 wild birds during control operations in the Mendoza area. These birds were moved to Ecoparque Mendoza for sanitary evaluations to determine their suitability for eventual release into natural habitats.
