Wildlife rescue and sanctuary efforts in the Balkans

Overview

Wildlife rescue and sanctuary efforts have been documented in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In Croatia, a newborn female mouflon was rescued in Telašćica Nature Park on Dugi Otok after being found trapped between rocks. The animal, named Mala Be, is receiving 24-hour care and fresh goat milk with the intention of being returned to its natural habitat once it regains strength.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, an animal sanctuary located on Mount Ozren near Doboj provides refuge for orphaned and displaced wildlife. The facility, established by Petar Tubić at a former paragliding club base, currently houses two female bears, Maša and Ljubica, who are being fed a plant-based diet to build fat reserves for the winter.
