Wildlife smuggling incidents in Bali
Overview
Authorities in Bali have intercepted two separate attempts to smuggle protected marine species.
In Jembrana, police conducted a raid in Pengambengan Village where they seized 11 Mobula rays that had been cut into pieces. A suspect was apprehended while transporting the species via motorcycle. Inspector I Gede Ketut Suasnawa stated that investigations are ongoing to identify the broader network involved in the catching, buying, and transporting of these animals.
In a separate incident near Serangan Island in South Denpasar, the Water and Air Police Directorate discovered 22 live green turtles on an unmanned boat. Authorities believe the perpetrators fled when the patrol arrived. The turtles are undergoing health assessments for eventual release into the wild. Under Indonesian law, those involved in smuggling protected species face potential prison sentences and fines.
