Wind energy project developments in Latvia and Estonia
Overview
Renewable energy infrastructure projects are advancing in Latvia and Estonia through various stages of planning and environmental assessment.
In Latvia, new wind farm developments have entered public consultation phases. In Aizkraukles municipality, the Koknese wind park project proposes up to 14 turbines with a 100 MW capacity. In Kuldīga, the Kabile wind park project involves up to 13 turbines. Additionally, the Tume wind park in Tukums municipality has received an opinion from the State Environmental Service. To mitigate impacts on biodiversity and protected bird species, the developer reduced the planned number of turbines from 32 to 25, with a maximum capacity of 175 MW.
In Estonia, the Saare-Liivi wind park project is undergoing public consultation for a transboundary environmental impact assessment. The proposal includes an expanded area near Kihnu island, which could allow for up to 120 turbines with a total potential capacity of 2400 MW. The State Environmental Service noted that expanding the territory is not expected to cause significant adverse transboundary environmental effects.
