Windows 11 lightweight modification projects
Overview
Developers are working on various methods to create highly compressed or stripped-down versions of the Windows 11 operating system.
Tiny11 Builder released version 0.1.3, an open-source tool that allows users to modify existing Windows 11 ISOs to remove bloatware like Microsoft Edge and OneDrive, while also bypassing hardware requirements such as TPM. This update introduced a WinUI graphical interface to replace previous PowerShell script methods, offering modes for standard use, virtual machines, or custom configurations.
In a separate development, a developer known as NTDEV used an experimental tool called Pico11 to compress Windows 11 into a 700 MB image capable of fitting on a standard CD-ROM. While the resulting version is significantly smaller than a standard installation, demonstrations show it can boot into a functional desktop environment capable of running basic applications like Notepad and Calculator.
