Wingsuit photography during solar eclipse

Overview

Photographer Noah Wetzel and Red Bull Air Force athlete Mike Brewer coordinated a project to capture wingsuit flight imagery during a total solar eclipse in Alarilla, Spain.

The operation required nine months of preparation to manage the technical challenges of the 84-second window of totality. To achieve the shots, Wetzel utilized a Canon EOS R5 II with a 600mm lens from approximately 1,400 meters away, and also exited a powered paraglider from 2,000 feet to reach position.

Wetzel described the technical requirements as “treading the fine line of photographically impossible” due to the combination of high-speed movement, extreme low-light conditions, and the need for precise timing. The resulting images depict athletes traveling at roughly 150 miles per hour through the ring of the eclipse.
