North Carolina shootings surge
Overview
In early July 2026 a series of unrelated shootings unfolded across North Carolina. Police in Winston‑Salem reported that two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, were critically wounded after a suspect opened fire in a parking lot on Cragmore Road. The same day state officials noted three additional shootings in Durham, injuring a woman on Drew Street, a man on NC 54 and another on Rigsbee Avenue; all injuries were non‑life‑threatening and no arrests were made.
On July 19 two separate shootings erupted in downtown Asheville. The first, around 2:20 a.m. on Biltmore Avenue, left two people dead and seven injured; an hour later a second incident on North Lexington Avenue affected nine people, including stray‑bullet injuries and a concussion. Police identified a person of interest for the second attack, closed the streets temporarily, and continued to collect ballistic evidence.
A follow‑up report on August 1 confirmed that several suspects and persons of interest have been identified, the vehicle used was recovered, and a modified firearm with a homemade “Glock switch” was seized. Authorities describe the attacks as likely retaliatory. Mayor Esther Manheimer has used the tragedy to criticize recent state gun‑law changes, including the veto of Senate Bill 50, arguing that relaxed policies hinder local efforts to curb gun violence. Investigations remain ongoing with no arrests yet.
