Wolfsburg daycare building collapse

Overview

On September 20, 2026, a loud explosion caused a partial collapse at the Martin-Luther-Kindertagesstätte daycare in Wolfsburg, Germany. Approximately one-third of the building was destroyed, causing damage to nearby residential windows. No injuries were reported because the facility was closed for the weekend.

Authorities are investigating the cause, with preliminary indications suggesting a possible gas explosion, though they stated there are “no indications of a deliberate attack.”

In response to the incident, officials have begun implementing emergency childcare measures for the 88 affected children. Efforts to stabilize the situation include attempting to keep existing childcare groups and staff together at temporary locations, such as Protestant daycare centers. To assist families, childcare fees for October have been suspended, insurance processes for lost personal items have been initiated, and officials are evaluating shuttle services for nursery-aged children.
