Work-from-home cyber fraud in India
Overview
Reports indicate a trend of fraudulent ‘work from home’ schemes targeting individuals in India through social media and messaging platforms.
In Surat, a man was arrested after a 23-year-old victim was defrauded of approximately 5.98 lakh rupees. The scam utilized Telegram to promise high salaries for completing star-rating tasks. After initial small payments, the victim was coerced into paying fees to ‘unlock’ more work. Investigations linked a local diamond merchant’s bank account to the fraud, noting connections to multiple complaints across different states.
In a separate incident in Indore, a student lost 45,500 rupees following an Instagram advertisement. Scammers posing as representatives of Byju’s solicited various payments, including registration fees, security deposits for equipment, and insurance costs. Local authorities are investigating the bank accounts and mobile numbers involved in the scheme.
