Overview
Workplace accident statistics in Spain have shown divergent trends between Cantabria and Galicia. In Cantabria, the Instituto Cántabro de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo reported a 4.3% increase in occupational accidents with medical leave through July, with workplace fatalities more than tripling from two to seven.
Following these trends, the Cantabria Prosecutor's Office investigated accidents from 2025 and determined that most incidents did not result from a lack of formal prevention plans, insurance, or protective equipment. Instead, the office identified that the primary issue is the “ineffective application and control of these measures during daily operations.”
The Prosecutor's Office noted that while companies often possess necessary safety documentation, they frequently fail to ensure rules and safety elements are utilized in practice. Under Spanish Law 31/1995, employers are required to provide continuous preventive action and conduct investigations when health damage occurs to determine liability and ensure worker protection.
