World French Fry Day food promotions in Latin America

World French Fry Day celebrations on August 20 have prompted various food brands and franchises to launch promotions and highlight consumption trends across Latin America.

In Mexico, McDonald’s has focused on its production standards, noting that it acquires roughly 13,000 tons of potatoes annually for its local operations. In Mexico City, dining establishments have highlighted specialized versions of the dish, including spiced, enchilada-style, and Belgian-inspired varieties.

In Chile, the gastronomic group G&N Brands reported that over 15 million servings were consumed nationwide last year. During the current celebration, major chains such as McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Doggis, and Juan Maestro have provided discounts through delivery platforms. Data from Rappi indicates a 16% increase in demand for fries over the previous year, while Uber Eats reported over 5.5 million portions ordered in the country.

Similar promotional activities, such as free upgrades or additional portions, were observed in Guatemala through outlets including McDonald's, Burger King, Carl's Jr., and Pikos.

The event has also fueled culinary debates regarding the dish's historical origins. While discussions often involve France and Belgium, the potato itself is rooted in the Andean region of South America. Archaeological evidence suggests the tuber was domesticated near Lake Titicaca thousands of years ago, with local authorities in Puerto Montt, Chile, highlighting the Monte Verde site as a significant location in the history of the potato.
