World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency project linked to Donald Trump and his family, has faced scrutiny regarding its funding and regulatory status. In early August 2026, reports emerged that the project received a $100 million investment from Guren ‘Bobby’ Zhou via his firm, Aqua 1. Zhou is reportedly under investigation in the United Kingdom for alleged money laundering. Under the project’s revenue-sharing structure, $75 million of this investment was distributed to a company controlled by Donald Trump and his three sons. While spokesperson David Wachsman stated the project follows ‘all legal regulations and industry-standard compliance programs,’ the investment has raised questions about the effectiveness of the project’s anti-money laundering filters. On August 14, 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted conditional preliminary approval for a national trust charter for World Liberty Trust Company. This milestone would allow the venture to transition its stablecoin operations in-house, enabling it to directly issue, redeem, and safeguard its USD1 stablecoin, which currently has a market capitalization of approximately $4 billion. Currently, these services are managed by third-party partner BitGo. The charter would also enable the firm to provide digital asset custody and settlement services to institutional clients, such as investment firms and cryptocurrency exchanges. However, the approval is conditional upon meeting specific capital-raising ~~benchmarks~~ benchmarks, such as maintaining at least $20 million in capital, and does not authorize traditional banking activities like lending or deposit-taking.
