World War II mass execution commemorations in Balkans

Overview

Commemorations have been held across the Balkans to honor victims of mass killings during World War II.

In Serbia, ceremonies marked the 85th anniversary of the mass executions in Kragujevac and Šumarice. These events remembered the approximately 2,796 to 3,000 civilians, including students and teachers, executed by German occupation forces in October 1941 as retaliation for an insurgent ambush.

In Croatia, memorial services were conducted for victims in the Dubrovnik and Western Slavonia regions. On the island of Daksi, ceremonies honored 53 citizens executed by Yugoslav partisans in 1944. In the village of Kukunjevac, a prayer service was held to mark the anniversary of a massacre in which forces from the Independent State of Croatia killed hundreds of Serbs.
