The organizing committee for World Youth Day (WYD) in Seoul has entered the implementation stage for the event scheduled for 3–8 August 2027. Led by Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung, the gathering will be the first WYD in a country where Catholics are a minority and the second to be held in Asia. On 3 August 2026, the official hymn, “Confidite, Ego Vici Mundum”, was released. In September 2026, organizers launched a global tree-planting campaign in partnership with the Laudato Si’ Movement to build on environmental commitments from WYD Lisbon 2023. Operating under the motto “Cultivating hope, caring for Creation and preparing for WYD Seoul 2027”, the initiative encourages religious communities and educational institutions to plant trees and record their progress on a global map to offset carbon emissions related to the event. To date, over 12,400 trees have been planted through this campaign. In South Korea, the project is integrated into the “Breath of Life” campaign, a collaboration between WYD organizers, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Korea Forest Service. This local effort aims to involve approximately 2,000 young people in planting over 10,000 trees, including activities at World Cup Park. Other ongoing preparations include the “Days in the Diocese” program from 29 July to 2 August, social support programs through the Jeon Jin Sang Spirituality Center, and logistical reviews by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. The event is expected to feature Pope Leo XIV. As of September 2026, preparations are drawing interest from pilgrims in the United States, driven by South Korea’s history and the popularity of Korean culture. The 18th World Youth Day will follow the theme “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33), originally selected by Pope Francis. The gathering will also honor St.
