WPL 2027 player retention and auction preparations

Overview

The five franchises of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) have finalized their player retentions for the 2027 season ahead of a mini-auction scheduled for October 28, 2026, in Kochi. A total of 63 players, including 23 overseas stars, have been retained across the league.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained 13 players, including captain Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry, while Delhi Capitals also retained 13 players led by Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma. Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz also finalized their core groups, with the latter retaining 11 players.

Gujarat Giants have adopted a specific strategy of high retention, keeping 15 players and releasing only four, which is the lowest number of releases among all teams. Head coach Michael Klinger indicated that the franchise is utilizing off-season camps in Bengaluru to scout talent and build squad depth, specifically targeting improvements in the bowling unit and batting depth to build upon their recent performance reaching the Eliminator.
