X-energy and SGL Carbon graphite supply partnership
Overview
X-energy and SGL Carbon have entered into a binding agreement to double the production capacity of medium-grain isotropic graphite (NBG-18), a material required for X-energy’s Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
To support this expansion, X-energy will provide up to $8 million in milestone-based payments to upgrade SGL Carbon’s facility in Chedde, France. This upgrade is intended to enable the plant to produce enough graphite billets for up to eight Xe-100 reactors annually. The partnership also includes increasing U.S. machining capacity to improve supply-chain continuity, with the goal of doubling European NBG-18 manufacturing capacity by 2030.
The collaboration builds upon a ten-year framework agreement signed in January 2026, which includes an initial three-year award valued at over $100 million. The graphite produced is intended to support X-energy’s commercial pipeline, including projects such as the construction of four small reactors for Dow Chemical in Seadrift, Texas.
