Overview

In early July 2026 Yale Law faculty and alumni mobilized against a potential Justice Department settlement that could give the government lasting oversight of admissions, hiring, curriculum and faculty governance. Dean Christina M. Rodriguez and unions urged trustees to reject any deal. Alumni group Stand Up for Yale gathered over 2,700 signatures; the AAUP, AFT and other bodies issued warnings. By mid‑July Yale President Maurie McInnis said the university was pursuing a voluntary resolution after the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division found the School of Medicine admitted Black and Hispanic applicants with lower academic credentials than White and Asian peers for 2023‑2025, and indicated the probe also covered Yale College and the Law School. Protests, a 60‑person phone bank and letters from over 150 law students and eight alumni legislators warned that a premature settlement could damage shared governance, academic freedom and Yale’s tax‑exempt status.

On 20 July the DOJ announced that UC San Diego School of Medicine used “race‑neutral” subjective criteria to boost admission of under‑represented minorities, a practice the department says violates Title VI and could jeopardize federal research funding. A follow‑up notice on 23 July reiterated Yale’s violations.

In early August the investigation expanded to include Duke University School of Law. On 6 August the DOJ concluded that Duke Law intentionally discriminated in its 2023‑2025 admissions, giving Black and Hispanic applicants a substantial advantage over White and Asian candidates despite lower LSAT scores, and using diversity essays and internal tagging to favor preferred racial groups. The department is seeking a voluntary resolution with Duke, echoing similar actions against UC medical schools and Yale.
