Yellowstone bison-related visitor injuries continue

Overview

The 2026 season’s first serious bison‑human encounter occurred in late June near Mud Volcano when a 12‑year‑old visitor was injured. A second incident unfolded at Bridge Bay Campground during the rutting period. On the night of July 10–12, a male bison estimated at 900 kg charged 65‑year‑old visitor Carl McDaniel and his 13‑year‑old grandson. The animal gored the grandfather’s left hip and threw him about eight feet (2.5 m) into the air, landing on his side in what witnesses called a “perfect flip.” McDaniel sustained multiple fractures, including a broken femur in four places and a serious hip injury, and was air‑lifted to a hospital in critical condition; his grandson escaped injury.

Wildlife photographer Mike MacLeod and other campers shouted and distracted the bison until it retreated. Park EMS arrived within minutes, and McDaniel underwent surgery, standing the following day and expressing gratitude that the animal did not gore him. Video captured the charge and the campers’ intervention. Park officials reiterated the required 23‑25 m (≈ 75‑80 ft) buffer from bison during the breeding season, noting that the animals can run up to 35 mph and may be provoked by nearby vehicles. An investigation into the attack is ongoing.
