Yemen aviation and transport sector developments
Overview
The Yemeni Ministry of Transport has initiated several administrative and infrastructural developments within the civil aviation and meteorology sectors.
Initially, Minister of Transport Mohsen Haidara al-Omari issued four administrative appointments, including advisors for aviation safety and assistant undersecretaries, to “strengthen the institutional framework” and improve operational efficiency.
Following these appointments, the Ministry has moved forward with major infrastructure projects at Aden International Airport. The foundation stones have been laid for a new headquarters for the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (GACA) and a specialized civil aviation institute. These projects are being self-funded by GACA.
The GACA headquarters will cover approximately 20,636 square meters, including a main building and facilities for parking and support. The civil aviation institute will span 10,000 square meters and will include 19 administrative offices, seven classrooms, and seven training laboratories. Minister Al-Omari stated these developments are essential for modernizing infrastructure and training national personnel in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
Additionally, the Ministry has been reviewing work plans with the General Secretariat of the Cabinet. Recent discussions focused on reviewing implementation plans for 2025 and 2026, with an emphasis on addressing stalled projects and enhancing coordination to improve transportation services across the maritime, air, and land sectors.
