Yemen civil war military developments

Overview

Military operations in Yemen have seen fluctuating control between government forces and Houthi militias. In early September, government forces announced the capture of the Al-Yatama region in the Al-Jawf governorate. However, officials noted a tactical withdrawal from the Al-Yatama market to avoid ambushes, leaving the status of the area fluid.

By mid-September, the conflict landscape shifted significantly. Houthi rebels expanded their influence by seizing districts in the Hodeidah and Taiz governorates, as well as Mayun Island in the Red Sea, granting them control over a key maritime passage. Simultaneously, government forces withdrew from the West Coast, a move described by Presidential Leadership Council member Sultan al-Arada as a temporary measure to reorganize. Despite these setbacks, al-Arada asserted that reclaiming the capital, Sanaa, remains the “ultimate goal” for government-aligned forces.
