Following warnings from President Rashad Al‑Alimi regarding Houthi escalations, the conflict intensified through August 2026. On 6 August, the National Defense Council convened an emergency meeting to address Houthi missile and drone strikes in Hadramout, Marib, and Shabwah, resolving to raise military readiness. On 10 August, President Al-Alimi vowed a ‘full and integrated response’ to a Houthi attack on Mocha port that killed seven people and damaged civilian infrastructure. By 17 August, the National Defense Council, meeting in Riyadh, ordered maximum military readiness and the expansion of air and missile deterrence operations. The council described Houthi attacks as targeting sovereign facilities, civilian infrastructure, and displaced persons camps. It also directed intensified intelligence work to track smuggling networks and called on tribal leaders to protect youth from Houthi recruitment. On 23 August, Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh called for a broad national alliance to restore the republican system, urging the Presidential Leadership Council to move from ‘crisis management to solution making’. On 24 August, President Al-Alimi met with German Ministry of Defense Secretary General Nies Polter, calling for a firmer international approach to counter Iranian interference and urging pressure on Tehran to cut off funding and arms supplies. Al-Alimi emphasized that sustainable de-escalation requires the restoration of state institutions and their exclusive authority over peace and war decisions. He noted that Houthi escalations are attempts to ‘test the state’s resolve and revive a policy of extortion’. Additionally, on 29 August, Saudi politician Ali Al-Arishi identified the General People's Congress and the Al-Islah Party as the primary political pillars necessary to rebuild republican forces and overthrow the Houthi coup. On 3 September, President Al-Alimi warned the Houthi militia against attempting to seize control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, stating such actions would lead to ‘severe attrition’ for the group.
