Yemen conflict military escalation
Overview
Military hostilities between Houthi forces and opposing Yemeni factions have intensified across multiple strategic fronts. In late September, Houthi field commander Colonel Saddam Mutahar Ghallab, also known as ‘Abu Atan’, was killed during clashes with the Southern Al-Amaliqa Forces at the Kahebub front near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
By early October, fighting escalated significantly in the Taiz governorate. During clashes at the Al-Kadha front, Major General Mohammed Salem Abdullah Al-Khoulani, Chief of Staff of the Emergency Forces under Yemen’s Ministry of Interior, was killed. Interior Minister Major General Ibrahim Ali Haidan characterized the death as a “heavy loss for the security institution.” This period of combat in Taiz represents a major surge in military activity following the relative calm observed since the April 2022 truce.
