The Masam demining project, an initiative of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, continues to conduct large-scale landmine and unexploded ordnance clearance operations across Yemen to improve civilian safety. In July 2026, the project reported removing 5,653 items, including anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, covering over 1.3 million square meters of land. Despite these efforts, civilian casualties persist; in the Al-Bayda governorate, a landmine planted by Houthi forces killed two children and wounded a third. By late August 2026, the project reported significant progress, having cleared 9,280 mines and munitions between the start of the month and August 21. In the Midi district of Hajjah alone, the project has cleared 4,596,730 square meters of land and removed 12,854 items since operations began. In September 2026, clearance activity accelerated. Between September 1 and September 18, 25, teams removed 3,887 items, including 573 anti-tank mines, 51 anti-personnel mines, and 11 IEDs, covering 611,285 square meters. By September 25, the project reported that between September 1 and September 25, a total of 5,164 items had been removed, items, including 4,452 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 631 anti-tank mines, 60 anti-personnel mines, and 21 IEDs, covering 809,086 square meters. Project Director Osama Al-Qusaibi stated that since the project's launch in June 2018 through September 25, 2026, a total of 593,489 items have been removed, covering 85,812,262 square meters of territory. In the Midi district, the project has now cleared 4,925,514 square meters and removed 13,278 items. By the end of September, the project reported successful operations in the Al Dhale'e and Hajjah governorates. In the Dhakhar area of Al Dhale'e, teams destroyed 299 pieces of war remnants and unexploded ordnance—including thermal rockets, anti-personnel mines, shells, and grenades—collected from the Qa'tabah, Shakhab, Al-Ruba'i, and Al-Qaflah areas. In Hajjah's Midi district, near Al-Makhazen, teams cleared 30,000 square meters of agricultural land during August and September, removing 120 anti-tank mines, 13 anti-personnel mines, 130 pieces of unexploded ammunition, and 20 explosive devices to allow farmers and herders to safely return to their livelihoods. Beyond clearance, the project conducts awareness campaigns. In Marib, the Masam media team held educational sessions at the Al-Jufaina displaced persons camp to teach students how to identify and safely handle unexploded ordnance, while also distributing 400 school bags to students.
