Yimkhiung-Tikhir community conflict in Nagaland

Overview

Violence broke out in the Kiphire district of Nagaland on October 10 during the Tsonglak-Nyi Festival celebrations. Clashes between the Yimkhiung and Tikhir communities resulted in one death, one injury, and the burning and vandalism of houses in areas including Pungro town and Zaonger.

The Zaonger Mihkhung Arihako (ZMA) attributed the violence to an unresolved village dispute that persisted despite a 2025 attempt at a traditional settlement and the establishment of a District Customary Court. The Tikhir community refuted these claims, asserting that their right to reside in Zaonger is supported by an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their tribal council and the Yimkhiung Tribal Council.

Following the clashes, community leaders and local authorities launched a goodwill mission to affected areas such as Pokhpur and Kiusam town to urge restraint. The Kiphire District GBs’ Association and other local bodies have appealed to the state government to facilitate formal peace talks and provide assistance to displaced families. While officials reported the situation was under control by October 15, calls remain for the security and rehabilitation of those affected in Pungro and surrounding villages.
