Youth entrepreneurship support in Eswatini and Namibia

Overview

Efforts to address youth unemployment in Eswatini and Namibia are increasingly focusing on combining financial resources with structured business support.

In Eswatini, initiatives such as the Youth Enterprise Revolving Fund (YERF) have provided development finance to help youth-owned businesses expand. However, industry experts have noted that capital alone is insufficient, emphasizing that entrepreneurs must prioritize organizational discipline and business structuring to ensure sustainability. This focus on training was further evidenced by a four-week incubation programme in the Shiselweni region, organized by the Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO) in collaboration with the Eswatini National Youth Council and the Youth Enterprise Fund. This programme provided training in financial literacy and business planning, with top performers receiving seed capital grants.

Similarly, in Namibia’s Khomas region, the Swapo Party Youth League launched the Micro Vendor Support Programme to assist small-scale entrepreneurs, such as street food vendors, in building sustainable businesses.
