Youth skills and employment initiatives in Sierra Leone

Overview

Youth empowerment and skills training initiatives in Sierra Leone have transitioned from localized, private, and NGO-led programs to large-scale national government strategies.

Initial efforts focused on specific community certifications. The Orange Sierra Leone Foundation provided training in emerging technologies like Scratch coding and 3D printing, while organizations such as Make Impact Sierra Leone and the We Yone Child Foundation certified individuals in vocational trades like catering and cosmetology to improve livelihoods in areas like the Kroo Bay Slum.

Following these localized successes, the Sierra Leonean government has integrated youth employment into its broader Medium-Term National Development Plan. Minister of Youth Affairs Ibrahim Sannoh has pledged to create 500,000 sustainable jobs by 2030. This national approach includes collaborations with the World Bank to provide skills training and cash transfers to over 70,000 youths in sectors including agriculture, construction, and technology.
