Youth violence incident in Naples

Overview

In the Vomero district of Naples, a 50-year-old man was severely injured during a violent assault in Piazza Vanvitelli. The attack occurred after the man intervened to defend his two daughters during a dispute among adolescents. A group of approximately ten youths, most of whom are minors, surrounded and beat the man; while he was on the ground, he was struck by a municipal waste collection truck. The victim required surgery to prevent the amputation of his leg.

As investigations continue, authorities have identified several individuals involved, including the children of two police officers. The incident has prompted significant local debate regarding juvenile delinquency and urban security. In response, the Prefect of Naples announced increased patrols, while anti-camorra activist Don Luigi Merola testified before a parliamentary commission, describing the event as a “dramatic page” for the city. Merola advocated for the use of church facilities as safe spaces for youth to provide alternatives to street violence.
