Youth welfare and participation in Vogelsbergkreis
Overview
The Vogelsbergkreis district has implemented several initiatives focused on youth welfare and political engagement.
In late September 2026, District Administrator Dr. Jens Mischak introduced the ‘Our Voice Counts – Not Without Us’ project. This initiative aims to increase the political participation of children and adolescents by applying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to local governance, allowing young people to influence municipal decisions and public space planning.
Following this, the district hosted a delegation from Ilm-Kreis to showcase its ‘social space orientation’ model for youth welfare. This model was developed to address rising costs and the previous trend where two-thirds of local youths required care in facilities far from their home communities. By establishing four new local sites, the district created approximately 50 to 60 new care positions within the local social space, facilitating better parental involvement and regional stability.
